A simple formatting is the worst option when discarding any electronic device that may contain personal data. Especially if the device in question is a hard drive, the large amount of data that may contain.
Even data from a failed hard drive can be accessed and read by various procedures. Although expensive and slow, could get their data from damaged devices discarded if business or personal information was important.
